Five tips to take care of your leather straps in the summer months

Taking care of a leather watch strap in the summer requires some special attention due to the heat, humidity, and increased perspiration. Here are five suggestions for keeping your leather strap in good condition:

1. Avoid excessive sun exposure

One of the most harmful things you can do to your leather watch strap is to expose it in direct sunlight for a long period of time.

As you may know, leather is a breathable material that requires special care and attention to maintain its natural properties. Overexposure to direct sunlight might cause the leather to fade and dry out.

2. Wear your watch strap looser

By wearing your strap looser than you normally would, you’ll allow air to circulate between the leather and your skin and protect it from sweat and skin oils. If you wear it too tight on your wrist, it will absorb excessive sweat, and it will age much faster. This trick is very helpful in the summer months because you’ll avoid bacteria development, and it’s also much more comfortable on the wrist.

3. Use Leather Conditioner

Being a natural material, leather needs to be moisturised regularly. To prevent it from drying out and cracking, I recommend using a leather conditioner once a month.

4. Store Properly

When you don’t wear your leather strap, store it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. You should also avoid humid environments as much as possible. When you don’t wear it, I recommend storing it in a watch box or a leather pouch to protect it from dust.

5. Rotate Straps

Give your leather watch strap time to rest and recover. Consider rotating between different leather straps during the summer months. This way, you’ll give each strap time to breathe and recover from daily wear, reducing the risk of damage from constant exposure to sweat, moisture, and heat. By rotating straps, you’ll prevent bad smells and bacteria from growing, which protects your strap from wearing prematurely.

By following these tips, you can help extend the life of your leather watch strap during the summer months.
